The Nike LD-1000 was launched in 1977 with a design by Bill Bowerman, and its initials stand for Long Distance. Its most striking feature is the dramatically widened heel, designed to reduce twisting in the leg and stress on the knee during long runs. That radical design sparked controversy at the time, and today it is precisely what makes it one of Nike's most original retro silhouettes. The Desert Ochre Hyper Royal colorway combines desert ochre with vibrant blue.
In addition to its fan-shaped heel, the LD-1000 features the waffle sole that Bowerman created using his wife's waffle iron. Current reissues combine mesh with suede overlays. In this version, Desert Ochre covers the upper while Hyper Royal appears on the Swoosh and details, creating a distinctly '70s vintage contrast.
