The SL 72 was introduced for the 1972 Munich Olympics as a competition shoe: SL stands for Super Light, and 72 is the year. Its construction — nylon to reduce weight, suede reinforcements on the toe, heel, and eyelets, an EVA midsole with a rubber toe guard, and a lugged outsole — was designed to shave off fractions of a second without sacrificing grip. It was also the first shoe to feature the trefoil logo. Today, it shares the classic collection with the Samba, Gazelle, and Spezial.
The silhouette is narrow and low, with a slightly raised toe that reveals its track origins. This colorway breaks with the model's usual understated look: a yellow nylon base, Three Stripes and reinforcements in Core Black, and Lucid Blue accents, a saturated blue that appears in the details.
